Frequently asked life insurance questions

What’s the difference between life insurance and a funeral plan?

Life insurance is designed to pay out a large amount of money to take care of your loved ones, long after you have passed away. This payout can go towards a home, on-going living expenses and even education. Life insurance can also include cover that pays out if you become critically ill.

A funeral plan typically pays out a smaller amount of money than life insurance. That is because funeral cover is designed to take care of the costs associated with a funeral alone.

How do I know if I need life insurance?

If you have loved ones or family who are relying on you to provide for them financially, then you will need to have a safety net in place to ensure that they are looked after when you're no longer around to do so. Putting life insurance in place will provide you with peace of mind knowing that they will be able to settle everyday expenses and maintain the standard of living they've become accustomed to. A life insurance policy will also see to it that your children will be able to further their education by being able to afford the necessary tuition fees.

Who can guide me in terms of how much life insurance I need?

OUTsurance will not conduct a full financial needs analysis and it remains your responsibility to make sure that you are adequately covered.  That being said, you may want to consider the following: the number of family members or loved ones who are financially dependent on you; your annual income; your age; any unsettled debt such as a financed vehicle, or a personal loan; your children's future educational needs; and any saving plans that you already have in place.

What is the OUTsurance No Meds Life product?

Our No Meds Life Insurance product refers to our comprehensive life insurance product with one difference: qualifying clients can get up to R5million life insurance without having to go for insurance medicals or blood test. One phone call is all it takes to get immediate life insurance in place with no needles and no stress!

Will my life insurance policy cover events such as self-inflicted injury or suicide?

Unfortunately, your OUTsurance life policy excludes the following instances, resulting directly or indirectly from intentional self-inflicted injury or suicide (please refer to your policy wording for more information on the relevant time period that apply in the case of suicide).

Other exclusions include the intentional intake of drugs, narcotics or medication unless prescribed by a registered medical practitioner and used as prescribed; driving while the concentration of alcohol in your blood exceeds the legal limit; if you refuse any treatment (including surgery) recommended by a registered medical practitioner or by our Chief Medical Officer (CMO); if you (or any person acting on your instruction) are involved in any criminal activity; nuclear reaction or nuclear radiation; active participation in war, armed international conflict, rebellion, civil commotion , sabotage, any act of terrorism whether acting alone or under instruction or any activity associated with the forgoing or the defence, investigation or containment thereof by any security force, unless this is a required part of your occupation noted on your schedule

In addition, you are not covered if a dreaded disease is a result of excessive alcohol consumption or use of drugs other than as prescribed by a medical practitioner.
